Egress Window Project Planner

Answer six questions about the wall and the room, and this will tell you which parts of an egress project apply to you — so you can read a quote and know what should be in it.

This does not produce a price, and it is not going to pretend to. Nobody can price an opening they have not seen, and the number of pages that try is exactly why quotes in this trade are so hard to compare. What it can do is name the components of your project, which is the part you can genuinely work out from six answers.

Project planner questions

Is there already a window in that wall?

The biggest single factor in what the work involves.

Is the room used or intended as a bedroom?

The egress requirement attaches to bedrooms, not to basements generally.

Roughly how wide will the finished opening need to be?

Openings wider than 1.2 m are treated differently by the City of Edmonton.

Is there another window close to where this one goes?

An opening adjacent to another window is an engineering condition on its own.

Will the window sit below ground level?

Below grade means a window well, and a well has its own requirements.

Have you seen water or ice collecting in an existing window well?
