The questions that come up before anyone books work, answered properly and cited where they touch on code.

Start with the question you actually have

Most people arrive at this subject from one of four directions, and the useful starting point is different for each.

  • “Is the bedroom in my basement even legal?” Start with the bedroom checklist. It walks through measuring your own window properly, which is where most people get a different answer than they expected.
  • “What exactly does the code require?” The requirements page has the specification, cited to the City of Edmonton, with the sizing arithmetic worked through.
  • “What is this going to cost, and do I need a permit?” Cost and permits. The permit page carries the engineering threshold that explains most of the difference between two quotes.
  • “There is water in my window well.” Drainage and Edmonton winters.

Everything below states its sources and the date they were last checked. Where a figure depends on design details or the authority having jurisdiction, the page says so instead of turning guidance into false certainty.
